Bedford — Population: 1,620
Looking east on Bedford, Iowa's Main Street, one can view more than two full blocks of historic Victorian-style structures, which have had the good fortune of escaping fires, tornadoes and demolition over the past century. Brick streets from approximately 1910 complement these attractive Vernacular Italianate structures, as do the nearby Taylor County Courthouse and Bedford Carnegie Library, both on the National Register of Historic Places.
Key to the preservation of this historic fabric and the rebirth of downtown Bedford is the efforts of area residents and the town's Main Street program that was founded in 1994. Seven antique shops and the Taylor County Historical Museum also delight residents and visitors with their focus on the past as do Bedford's four red brick churches with their beautiful, late 19th century stained glass. Town History
Early in 1853, a three-man commission appointed by Iowa's third General Assembly chose the area where Bedford is located to be the "seat of justice." By April, a surveyor had platted the town of Bedford and in July the first lots were sold. Edwin Houck, who arrived in Taylor County in 1854 and operated the county newspaper for many years, is considered the founder of Bedford. The county courthouse, constructed in 1892, serves as a favorite Bedford landmark, and The Garland Hotel, constructed in 1857, is the oldest building in town.
Landmarks and Unique Local Features
Downtown Buildings on the National Register of Historic Places:
- Taylor County Courthouse - Built in 1893 for less than $50,000, this Richardson Romanesque-style structure with a tower is the centerpiece of downtown.
- Bedford Carnegie Library - Constructed in 1915, this historic structure still serves Bedford as a public library.
- Garland Hotel - Originally known as the Bedford House, the hotel was a stage coach depot from 1857 until the arrival of the railroad in 1872. The lobby of Bedford's oldest building remains as it was in the early days.
- Red Brick Streets - Started in 1910 and completed in the next few years, these brick streets continue to connect much of the town, including Main Street.
- Antique Stores - Seven antique merchants make Bedford a top stop for collectors.
Annual Events
- June - Flea Market & Crafts in the Courtyard - The fourth weekend in June features an antique extravaganza on Bedford's unique brick streets.
- July - Fourth of July Celebration - Bedford's patriotic spirit is out in full force during one of southwest Iowa's largest parades held downtown and an impressive fireworks display over the nearby Lake of Three Fires state park.
- Fall - Pheasant and Quail Hunting - The Bedford area's landscape serves as a natural habitat for game birds, attracting hunters from all around.
