Town History
Founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1869, Charles City has been a center of activity
in Iowa’s upper Cedar River Valley ever since. The Cedar River was the focus
for early development, including the establishment of a sawmill by the town’s
founder Joseph Kelly. The Suspension Bridge, a Charles City landmark, was constructed
in 1906. A deadly tornado struck the city on May 15, 1968 and caused $30 million
in damage. As a result, much of the town boasts a "newer" look.
